St George’s, University of London’s eighth annual Education Day took place on Wednesday 14th November 2018. The day brought people together from the University, Joint Faculty, and NHS Trust to explore the theme of ‘Innovation in Education’, while showcasing educational research, teaching and learning innovations from across our community.
The WAVES group supported, exhibited and presented at the 3rd International Conference on Medical Education Informatics, which was held this year at Institute of Medical Education, Leeds, UK, from 6-7th September 2018. The conference was jointly organised by the Leeds Institute of Medical Education and the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
The WAVES team delivered a pre-conference workshop, ‘Widening Access to Virtual Educational Scenarios (VS) Authoring and implementing’ at the 2018 AMEE conference in Basel, Switzerland. AMEE is the largest medical education conference globally with over 4000 delegates, and in addition to the workshop; the WAVES network had an exhibition stand which promotes the tools available from of the WAVES project and of course the Virtual Scenario training MOOC which had already completed its first successful run.
The WAVES project has been working hard to create some tips, tools and guideline for those who are interested in using and creating their own Virtual Scenarios for teaching or training both within academia and within the workplace. We have created a knowledge toolkit and technical toolkit to address some of the needs required from our needs analysis from end-users during the start-up of the project. We now want to know if your perceptions and needs have changed since then.
The second WAVES Network event We are our choices: Learning to Make Good Decisions was held on 24th October 2018 in London, UK. The event welcomed national and international participants, involved in the WAVES Network, and those interest in using Scenario-Based Learning for training and teaching.
During this year’s Annual MedBiquitous Conference the WAVES team presented a number of presentation during the two days. The conference is a perfect place to network with colleagues from around the world to share and discuss how digital technologies can promote continuous improvements in health professions education.
The Association for Talent Development (ATD) conference is an event aimed at talent development professionals who are passionate about ensuring that their workforce is prepared to face the demands of the ever-changing business environments. It is the largest events for talent development professionals worldwide, with over 10,000 participants, 400 speakers, 300 education sessions and 400 exhibitors.
Through the OEB 2018 conference the WAVES team delivered a workshop on using and creating virtual scenarios for training. There was a lot of interest generated from the session and one of the contacts we made was with the Associate Fellow from United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) whom are a centre of excellence for training and knowledge management within the United Nations system.
The last Training Against Medical Error (TAME) project meeting was held within the Hue City of Vietnam. This is a project which is part of the WAVES network and is using Virtual Scenarios – specifically virtual patient cases within the clinical curriculum to train medics against making medical errors in the work place.
The WAVES project partners had their face to face meeting in Munich during April 2018. This is part of their commitment to the project to meet twice a year to discuss and make decisions on the WAVES project.
This year’s Ottawa conference took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates alongside the International Conference on Medical Education (ICME). The OTTAWA conference takes place every two years in various locations and is focused around assessment within medicine and healthcare. Each conference is associated with another and this year the collaboration was with ICME which focuses on the reform of medical education, using international standards and applying these in developing countries.
Using Virtual Scenarios to Create Effective Learning MOOC is now open for enrolment!
Have you ever learnt something, but then when it came to actually using it in real life you wished you had practiced beforehand. For example you wouldn’t want to fly an aircraft, perform a surgery or manage a legal issue without having some training first.
Sheetal Kavia and Terry Poulton presented a webinar to the WAVES associate partners on 12th January 2018. The webinar covered information about the forth coming MOOC which will be delivered during Spring 2018.
Chara Balasubramaniam, Lindsay Germain of Bayer Plc, and Sheetal Kavia, Terry Poulton of St George’s, University of London, led a workshop titled “Creating impactful learning: Learning through scenarios” at Online Educa Berlin on the 8th of December 2017. The workshop, categorised as a BusinessEduca session, was fully subscribed on the day with 40 learning and development professionals attending the session predominantly from business but also academia.
